It is an inevitable but interesting feature of creatures like us that we never knew or now don’t remember the causal origin of many of our beliefs; and, for those we do, the causal origin often runs back to a more fundamental belief and the causal origin of that is opaque to us, so that even if the proximate causal origin is known the ultimate origin is not.
